What's the actual first move when you have zero tech connections and want to network into PM?

I’ve been staring at my LinkedIn for the past week trying to figure out how to start conversations with PMs, and honestly it feels kind of impossible. Everyone in my network is in finance or operations. I don’t know a single person working in tech, let alone someone with a PM title. So my question is: what’s the realistic first move here? Do I start cold-messaging random PMs on LinkedIn? Do I go the APM program route because at least that structure gives you intro meetings? Do I find some angle—like connecting through a mutual interest or targeting specific companies? I feel like I’m missing some obvious entry point that people who already have tech connections just don’t have to think about. Has anyone actually built a meaningful PM network from basically zero, or is that just way harder than the people who got lucky with connections want to admit? What’s the actual playbook here?

cold messaging random pms doesn’t work unless you have something valuable to say. most people just spam ‘hey i want to learn about pm’ and get ignored. real move is to find specific problems companies are solving, reach out with a thoughtful take on how they could do it better, then ask for 15 mins. makes you memorable instead of another resume.

apm programs aren’t a shortcut to networking, they’re just a different vehicle. you still have to build relationships yourself, they just happen inside a structured environment. if you can’t network solo, an apm won’t magically fix that.

here’s the thing nobody says: most pms got their jobs through someone they actually knew. that’s the reality. if you’re starting from zero, you’re basically playing on hard mode. but it’s not impossible—you just need to be smarter and more persistent than people with connections.

okay this is really helpful actually. ill try the thoughtful angle instead of just asking for coffee

You can absolutely do this! Build your thinking out loud, show genuine interest, and PMs will talk to you. You’ve got this!

I started with literally no one in tech too. Went to startup coffee shops, attended product meetups, and just… showed up. That’s where I met my first PM contact. She wasn’t even looking to hire, but we got coffee because I cared about the space, not because I had a connection to leverage. Three months later her company had a role and she thought of me.

From an outreach effectiveness standpoint, cold messaging on LinkedIn yields approximately 5-8% response rates with generic messaging, versus 15-20% when you reference specific product decisions or company strategy. The differentiation is specificity and demonstrated knowledge. Additionally, attending industry events or joining online communities (Reddit, Slack groups focused on product) increases serendipitous connections by roughly 3x compared to pure cold outreach, since these spaces involve existing relationships and mutual interests.
