I’m currently working as an SAP ABAP developer at a major consulting firm but I’m not enjoying it much. When I first started my career, I thought about becoming a software engineer but discovered I wasn’t great with algorithms and data structures. Now I’m finding that ABAP programming isn’t clicking with me either.
I keep thinking that moving into management roles might be better suited for my skills and interests. However, I’m wondering if getting an MBA would actually be worth the investment. From a return on investment perspective, does it make financial sense?
I’m really torn about what direction to take my career in. Has anyone been in a similar situation? What would you recommend?
Honestly, jumping straight to an MBA sounds like throwing money at a problem you haven’t figured out yet. You’ve already discovered you don’t like two different types of work - maybe figure out what you DO like before dropping 100k+ on another degree. Consulting already gives you decent exit opportunities. Why not try switching to a client-side role first? Plenty of former consultants move into corporate strategy or operations without MBAs. That whole “management track” thing might just be another thing you think you want until you’re actually doing it.
Your consulting background is a huge advantage! Look into business development or client success - both roles really let your relationship skills shine. They’re also natural stepping stones into management. You’ve definitely got what it takes!
