Starting Fresh at New Amazon Facility - Career Advancement Strategy Questions

Hey everyone,

I’m about to start working at a new Amazon warehouse and wanted to get some feedback on my career plans. I used to work in quality control and was a trainer at my old facility before leaving to finish college. Now I have my business degree and some Six Sigma certification.

I’m starting a full time night shift position at this new location next week. This will actually be my fifth Amazon site - I’ve worked at several others and helped with opening two new buildings before.

My main goal is to get back into quality control or process improvement roles pretty quickly since I have experience in those areas. I also want to become a trainer again if they need people for that. I really enjoyed helping new workers learn the safety procedures and work standards.

Since I’ll have over 2 years of tenure as a full time employee plus my college degree when I start, I’m hoping this gives me some advantages. My plan is to work hard in my current role and then apply for internal positions after my 90 day probation period ends. I’m interested in quality, learning department, or maybe HR roles.

I’ve always liked working for Amazon and feel good about coming back now that I have better qualifications.

Do you think this sounds like a reasonable approach? Any advice for someone trying to move up quickly at a new facility?

Thanks for any input you can share.

you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. yeah, you’ve got the degree and experience, but amazon makes everyone wait regardless of qualifications. they’ll stick you on random tasks for months while saying “positions will open soon.” tenure doesn’t mean as much as you think - i’ve seen people with way more time get passed over for external hires. try if you want, but keep your expectations realistic.

Your experience plus degree is a killer combo! Start networking with management now and jump on extra projects when you can. New facilities always have quality roles opening up. You’re in a great spot to land something good!

You’re gonna crush it with that background! Get buddy-buddy with the Learning coordinators and Quality folks in your first few weeks - don’t wait for the 90 days to end. At my facility, they were desperate for trainer experience and grabbed someone after just 60 days. Your multi-site experience is huge, shows you’re adaptable. Drop your Six Sigma cert casually in conversations - that stuff catches their attention for process improvement roles.
