Networking into banking from literally zero connections—what's actually a realistic timeline?

I’ve been reading through networking advice and I feel like I’m getting painted an unrealistic picture. The successful story stuff is great—cold outreach that turned into coffee chats that turned into internships—but I’m trying to get grounded in what actually takes time when you’re starting from nothing.

I’m a junior with no alumni network in banking, no family connections, nobody. I’m serious about a summer internship this year, but I’m also being realistic that it might take longer. I want to know: if I start cold outreach now, what should I actually expect in terms of timeline? How long before conversations turn into real opportunities? Is there a realistic window where this can happen, or am I basically banking on next year or later?

I’m also wondering if there’s a point where you’re just beating a dead horse—like, if I’m networking for a year and getting nowhere, is that a sign this path isn’t realistic for me, or is that just the normal grind?

I want to be ambitious but also not delusional about what’s possible when you’re starting from zero connections.

Real talk? Zero to internship offer without connections typically takes 3-4 months minimum if you’re executing well. But that’s assuming you’re sending solid outreach, getting maybe 5-10% response rate, converting some of those into coffee chats, and actually impressing people. Some people take 6-8 months. A year of grinding with nothing is less about timeline and more about execution—either your outreach sucks or your interviews suck. Timeline’s only one variable.

Don’t get me wrong, cold networking is harder than having connections. But it’s not impossible. The people who fail aren’t failing because timing—they’re failing because they’re generic, not impressive, or they give up too early. If ur serious about this, expect 4-6 months of consistent outreach before real momentum. And by consistent I mean like 20-30 emails a month, quality conversations, follow-up. That’s the baseline.

omg i was worried abt this too but literally got a coffee chat within 2 weeks of my first cold email so timelines can vary a lot? i think it depends on the quality of outreach & how much ur in season

ive heard ppl say the key is volume + quality. like dont just send 5 emails & wait, send more but make each one good. then eventually something sticks?

The realistic timeline depends on several factors: your outreach quality, the time of year (recruiting cycles matter significantly), how you’re sourcing contacts, and your ability to convert conversations into relationships. Starting from zero, a reasonable expectation is: 2-4 weeks to get early conversations from initial outreach if executed well. 1-2 months to establish 3-5 meaningful coffee chats with people willing to engage. 2-4 months for those conversations to potentially yield an internship opportunity, assuming good fit and timing. However, this assumes consistent effort—probably 20-30 quality outreach emails per month, refinement based on feedback, and genuine follow-up. If you’re a year in with nothing, the variable to investigate isn’t time—it’s whether your outreach is compelling, your interviews are resonating, or your approach needs adjustment.

One important nuance: the timeline is nonlinear. You might have nothing for three months, then suddenly three conversations happen in two weeks. This is why consistency matters more than pace. The analysts without connections who successfully break in are almost never those with the most impressive first email. They’re the ones who sent quality outreach consistently, refined based on feedback, and happened to connect with someone responsive at the right time. Expect 4-6 months of consistent effort as a realistic horizon, but understand that luck and timing are real variables. If you’re not seeing any traction after 6 months of genuine effort—good emails, genuine follow-up, real conversations—then it’s worth examining whether your positioning or approach needs rethinking.

You’ve got this! Zero connections is tough but totally doable. Start now with quality outreach and you could absolutely have conversations within months. Consistency is your superpower!

The great news: cold networking works! People succeed from zero all the time. Give yourself a few months of solid effort and you’ll be amazed at what opens up. You’re closer than you think!

I remember feeling like I was wasting time for the first few months because I was getting a lot of nothing. But then one person actually engaged, invited me to coffee, and that one conversation opened three more doors. Suddenly things moved. The timeline isn’t linear—it’s more like a hockey stick. A lot of nothing, then momentum. Just gotta not give up before the momentum part.

I had a friend who spent eight months cold networking with almost nothing. At month eight, someone actually became a real mentor, and stuff started happening. It felt like forever at the time, but in retrospect, eight months of effort invested in the right person was worth it. You just gotta know when you’re executing well versus when you need to adjust. She was executing well; it just took time.

The timeline elasticity increases if you’re starting outside of recruiting season. Q4 and early January are typically slower. Summer recruiting cycle (January-April for summer internships) yields faster timelines than off-season outreach. Starting in November for a summer internship gives you roughly 2-3 months of cold networking in off-season before recruiting season accelerates responses. This means realistic timeline for off-season start: 2-3 months to get conversations, then an additional month once recruiting season hits. Total: 4-5 months if starting now. Alternative strategy: focus heavily on conversations during off-season, build relationships, then leverage those warmed relationships once recruiting season peaks.
