Hey folks!
I’m looking to dive into product management literature but can’t decide where to begin. I’ve narrowed it down to four books and would really appreciate your thoughts on which one delivered the most practical value for you.
My shortlist includes:
- Good Strategy Bad Strategy
- The Mom Test
- Swipe to Unlock
- Outcomes Over Output
A bit about me: I work as a data analyst and manage an online store on the side. I’m hoping to transition into product management eventually and want to build up my knowledge base. I’m not necessarily looking for the easiest read, just the one that will give me the biggest bang for my buck in terms of applicable insights.
Which of these resonated most with your actual PM work? Any standouts for someone preparing for product interviews?
Made the same transition from analytics to PM myself. Don’t pick just one book - go with both. The Mom Test and Outcomes Over Output work perfectly together. One teaches you how to validate what customers actually want, the other shows you how to measure success properly. Your data background’s already an advantage since you get metrics, but these books will help you connect those numbers to real customer problems. In PM interviews, you’ll stand out if you can talk about both customer discovery and outcome measurement. Shows you understand the full product lifecycle. Start with whichever feels more foreign right now - customer research or strategic metrics.
Good Strategy Bad Strategy is my pick from your list. The other books focus on tactics, but this one changes how you think about product strategy - huge advantage in PM interviews. Rumelt’s framework helps you spot real strategy versus wishful thinking, which is crucial when evaluating product opportunities and roadmaps. With your data background, you’ll love his emphasis on diagnosing problems first instead of jumping straight to solutions. The case studies show how successful products come from clear strategic thinking, not just piling on features. When I switched to product management, interviewers always dug into strategic reasoning. This book gave me the vocabulary and mental models to explain product vision clearly. Plus, the strategic principles work great for your online store too - you’ll identify real competitive advantages instead of chasing every trend.
Honestly, I’d go with Outcomes Over Output from your list. It changed how I approach product decisions at my current job. The book hammers home focusing on impact instead of just shipping features - super relevant for PM interviews too. Coming from data analysis like you, you’ll appreciate how it connects metrics to actual business outcomes. I read it before my first PM interview and could speak confidently about outcome-driven thinking, which helped me stand out. It’s practical without being theory-heavy.
Swipe to Unlock is seriously underrated for PM interviews. It covers tech fundamentals that analysts often miss - like how Uber’s surge pricing actually works or why Netflix ditched DVDs. Made me way more confident talking about different business models in interviews. The case studies give you plenty of examples when you’re discussing product decisions.
The Mom Test is the one for you! It focuses on conducting effective customer conversations and pulling out genuine insights, which are crucial skills for product management. Happy reading and best of luck on your journey!
Another “first PM book” thread, here we go lol. Since everyone’s already sharing their favorites, I’ll be straight with you - Good Strategy Bad Strategy will be the most painful read but also the most useful long-term. Rumelt doesn’t hold your hand and calls out 90% of what companies label “strategy” as complete BS. Perfect for someone with a data background since you already know how to spot when numbers don’t add up. The other books are fine, but this one actually teaches you to think like a PM instead of just memorizing interview tactics.
