How to Move from Financial Accounting Role to Investment Banking Career

Hi all,

I need some help figuring out how to switch from accounting work to investment banking. Right now I work as an Accounting Manager for my state government doing financial reports and budget work. Before this I spent about a year at a private lending company handling monthly collection tracking, investment valuations, and investor relations. I also worked at a consulting firm called Aduro Advisors where I managed client operations for VC and PE firms and created financial reports.

I got laid off from the private lending job but found this government position pretty quickly. I have about 5 years total in accounting, financial analysis, and working with clients. Now I want to get into investment banking, maybe M&A or corporate finance.

I think my accounting and analysis background helps but I’m not sure what steps to take next. My current government job is stable but I really want to make this career change happen.

Anyone here made a similar move from accounting to IB? What should I focus on to make myself a better candidate? Any advice would be really helpful.

Thanks!

UPDATE: I already completed my MBA
