How to craft cold emails to senior bankers without sounding desperate?

hey everyone, I’m a first-year analyst trying to network with MDs for deal exposure. I found community templates helpful, but how do you personalize them without coming off as transactional? I keep second-guessing my tone – should I keep it hyper-professional or show some personality? What’s worked when YOU reached out to busy executives?

newsflash: nobody cares about your ‘personality’ in cold emails. MDs get 50 of these daily. trick is to mention a recent deal they did in 10 words max, ask ONE specific q, and for god’s sake don’t say ‘pick your brain’. follow up once then move on. this isn’t tinder.

i literally had same prob! tried adding emoji once - big mistake lol. my MD mentor said use their deal numbers from 10k’s? like ‘saw u led x merger, curious how y affected valuation?’ worked for me! but still get ghosted 80% time tbh

Three rules for cold outreach at senior levels: 1) Reference deal mechanics, not flattery 2) Request 8-12 minutes maximum 3) Propose 2 specific timing options. Example: ‘Would 20 minutes on Q3 M&A pipeline challenges be helpful? Available Tue 3PM or Thu 10AM EST.’ Shows respect for their calendar.

You’ve got this! Remember every great connection starts with a single email :rocket: Maybe include a short industry insight you genuinely admire about their work? Positive energy shines through!

Analysis of 127 successful cold emails from IB alum network shows: 68% led with technical questions about deal structures, 22% referenced alumni connections, 10% used regulator commentary on the bank’s recent deals. Average read time: 23 seconds. Recommend embedding numerical hooks in first sentence.
