How do you make the most of apm mentor matching when switching to product management?

Trying to pivot into PM from healthcare admin with zero tech connections. Our APM program offers mentor matching, but how do I actually leverage this effectively? Should I prioritize finding mentors at specific companies or with certain expertise? What questions make these sessions valuable beyond surface-level advice? Also – how awkward is it to ask for ongoing guidance?

mentorship programs = corporate theater. most sr PMs there just wanna pad their ‘leadership experience’ for promotions. real talk: stalk PMs shipping features you admire on linkedin, offer to buy them coffee, and skip the program middleman. hustle > hand-holding

my mentor let me sit in on her sprint planning!! :exploding_head: just ask directly – they expect you to be curious! i send recap emails after each chat too so she remembers me

Three strategic steps: 1) Pre-match research - identify mentors whose career paths align with your goals 2) Prepare battle-tested questions (e.g., ‘How would you prioritize features without user data?’) 3) Always end with ‘What 1 action would make our next conversation more valuable?’ Creates continuity.

This is SO exciting! Mentors love passionate learners – your enthusiasm will shine through! :rocket:

I almost ghosted my first mentor match out of nervousness. Glad I didn’t – turned out he needed someone to beta test his new PM toolkit. Now we collab monthly. Sometimes they gain value too!

2023 PM Mentor Program Survey (n=412) shows mentees who set 3+ SMART goals pre-matching receive 68% more intro referrals. Suggest quantifying success metrics like ‘Get 2 referrals to Series B+ startups’ before your first session.
