Two years in IB and the exit path decision is eating me alive. PE recruiters push carry potential, HF folks talk market intuition, consulting promises ‘variety’…but everyone’s selling their side hard. I’m craving raw takes from those who’ve lived it: beyond the brochures, what genuinely sucks/rocks about each path? What blind spots should a first-time jumper like me be tracking before committing?
pe = babysitting ceos while lps micromanage your lunch breaks. hf = getting margin called by a 28yo who codes in his sleep. consulting? enjoy decking your way to existential dread. pick your poison, but dont kid yourself - the golden handcuffs just swap wrists. pro tip: follow the booze budget.
srry if tHiS is basic but how r ppl even deciding?! i herd PE needs crazy modeling tests. hedge funds want stock pitches?? im so lost pls help
what skills shud i focus on first??
This is EXCITING! All paths open doors ![]()
Trust your IB training - you’ve got this! Maybe shadow someone in each field? So much growth ahead!
My buddy went PE and got stuck redoing portco slides at 2am for six quarters straight. Another joined a HF, made bank during COVID vol but developed a nervous eye twitch. I took the consulting leap - miss deep dives but love wearing jeans to work now. No perfect answers sadly.
Recent exit surveys show 68% of PE hires cite lack of operating experience as initial shock. HF transition success correlates strongly with pre-existing Bloomberg terminal mastery (r=0.72). Consulting placements report 22% higher satisfaction when prior mentorship occurred. Quantify your gap areas before committing.
