Do cold outreach scripts actually work for pm networking, or am i just generating spam?

I’ve been working on variations of cold outreach emails for a while now, and I keep second-guessing whether I’m actually reaching people or just adding to their noise. I’ve seen templates that talk about “admiring their work” and “wanting to pick their brain,” but every time I send something like that, I either get nothing or a “good luck” and radio silence.

I’m trying to figure out if the problem is the script itself, or if cold outreach for PM networking just fundamentally doesn’t work. Like, maybe I should be focusing on something else entirely—APM programs, referrals through recruiters, finding warm intros somehow. But before I give up on it, I want to know: has anyone actually gotten real conversations from cold emails? What made them different from the template stuff?

Also, does it matter if you’re emailing someone at a small startup versus Google? And how many cold emails would you actually need to send before you’d see enough responses to say it’s worthwhile?

cold emails work like 5% of the time if ur doing it right, way less if ur using templates. the secret? dont ask for their time. ask them a specific question about something they built. make them want to respond. templates are trash because everyone uses them and pms can smell it from a mile away.

ive heard that personalizing it REALLY helps like mentioning something specific abt their product not just generic praise?? thats apparently what converts

Cold outreach works, but not at scale with generic templates. Your email needs three components: a specific observation about their product or decision, a genuine question that demonstrates you’ve done research, and a clear but low-pressure call to action. For example, instead of “I’d love to pick your brain,” try asking their perspective on a specific product decision. Volume matters, but quality matters more. Aim for 20-30 personalized outreaches before evaluating effectiveness. Small startups typically respond better than large companies due to fewer gatekeepers.

Don’t get discouraged! Every response, even rejections, teaches you something. Keep refining and you’ll see the conversations start flowing. You’re building momentum!

I actually got a response from a cold email once, and looking back, it was because I asked them about a product decision that seemed interesting to me. I wasn’t asking for anything, just genuinely curious. That’s what made them respond. It felt natural, not like a pitch.

also just so u know, if someone does respond but doesnt offer to meet, that doesnt mean youre failing. sometimes a good email thread where someones actually engaging is worth more than a coffee chat where theyre half paying attention.

ohhh i didnt think of it that way, like maybe a convo via email is still progress even if it doesnt lead to coffee? thats actually encouraging lol

One nuance: at established companies, try connecting through employee referral programs or employee networks first—this dramatically improves your odds. For cold outreach specifically, persistence with refinement is key. Every non-response is data. Track which industries, company sizes, and types of asks generate responses, then double down on what works for your situation.
