Career Path and Expectations for Operations Management Consulting Role?

I’m currently studying Math as my main subject with a minor in Statistics. This summer I’ll be starting as a management consultant focusing on operations and organizational design at a tech consulting company that’s pretty similar to the Big4 firms.

I have a few questions about what I’m getting into:

  1. What kind of projects and daily tasks should I expect in this role?
  2. Where could this position lead me in terms of career growth?
  3. What graduate programs would make sense for my future - should I consider specific master’s degrees or go for an MBA?

I’m looking for any advice or experiences people might have in similar positions. Thanks in advance for any help!

Your math background is perfect for ops consulting. You’ll crush the analytical side when dealing with complex operational problems. You’ll work on supply chain optimization, digital transformation, and performance improvement projects - basically anywhere numbers drive strategy decisions.

Career-wise, this opens up senior consulting roles, internal strategy positions at big companies, or specialized ops leadership jobs. Lots of people use this experience to jump into product management or biz dev at tech companies.

For grad school, I’d wait 2-3 years and get some consulting experience first. You’ll figure out whether you want an MBA, Master’s in Operations Research, or MS in Data Science based on where you actually want to go.

awesome to hear about your role! you’ll dive into process mapping and data analysis, which should really align with your skills. it can lead to internal roles in tech or deeper into consulting. just focus on gaining experience before worrying about grad school.

lol everyone’s being way too optimistic here… reality check: you’ll spend most of your time making slides and cleaning up other people’s messes. Yeah, the “variety” sounds great until you’re pulling 70-hour weeks because some client can’t handle basic inventory management. Your math skills? Mostly calculating your overtime hours. The exit opportunities are solid though, if you survive long enough to use them.

Oh man, you’re gonna love the variety! I did something similar right after college and wasn’t ready for all the client work. One week I’m redesigning warehouse workflows, next I’m helping a startup fix their org structure. The math background helps but you’ll pick up soft skills you never knew you needed. My biggest advice? Don’t stress about the MBA yet - I thought I needed one right away but after 18 months the experience was way more valuable. Plus your employer might sponsor it later if you go that route!

Great move with your quant background! Operations consulting is mostly analytical work (60-70%) with some client face time (30-40%). You’ll dig into workflow optimization, cost cutting, and tech implementations. Expect to live in Excel and PowerPoint as a newbie. Most people hit senior consultant in 2-3 years, then manager after that. About 40% jump to industry roles after 3-5 years - usually supply chain or strategy spots. For school, most firms want you to get 2-4 years under your belt before doing an MBA. Your stats minor actually sets you up well for specialized programs in Operations Research or Supply Chain Management. Those are becoming way more valuable than generic MBAs in this space.

Congrats on the opportunity! Your math/stats background is perfect for ops consulting. You’ll do tons of client work and tackle all kinds of problems. Great role for opening doors - have fun with it!
