Career guidance needed after military service completion

I need some advice about my next career move. I have a business administration degree from a good college and I’m about to finish my 4-year military service. During my time in service, I’ve gained experience in leadership roles, managing people, handling projects, and dealing with risk management tasks. I’ve been applying for assistant project manager positions, mainly in construction companies and consulting firms through job boards and company websites, but I’m not getting many responses back. While I could continue with military life, I don’t want to deal with constant relocations anymore. I’m looking for suggestions on what other career paths might be a good fit for someone with my background. I’m flexible about work arrangements and willing to relocate if needed. My goal is to find something that pays at least $58,000 annually. Any recommendations would be helpful.

Your leadership background is perfect for management trainee programs! Companies like Target and other big retailers have solid programs built for veterans. They’ll fast-track you straight into management with great pay and room to grow.

Look beyond just project management - operations management and business analyst roles could be great fits. Your military risk management experience transfers perfectly to supply chain work, quality assurance, or process improvement in manufacturing and logistics. Government contractors love hiring military folks and usually pay more than your $58k target. Federal jobs have veteran preference programs that give you a real edge. Don’t just scroll job boards - connect with veteran networking groups and hit up industry meetups nearby. Tons of companies want to hire vets but won’t always mention it in their job posts.

Look into federal contracting - it’s a goldmine for people with your background. Defense contractors are dying to hire ex-military with business degrees. Your combo of military experience and business admin makes you perfect for program management, contracts, and client relationship roles. Companies like Booz Allen Hamilton, Lockheed Martin, and CACI pay way above what you’re targeting and actively recruit transitioning service members. Your risk management experience? That’s huge for compliance and security positions they can’t fill. Don’t just chase traditional corporate jobs. Check out business development, proposal management, or technical program coordinator roles in defense. These jobs use your military knowledge AND your business degree, typically starting at $65-75k. Plus, your security clearance is worth serious money - civilians can’t compete with that.

The biggest mistake I see vets make? Skipping veteran hiring events. Companies like Amazon, UPS, and FedEx actively recruit there - they want your leadership experience for supervisor positions. Also look into healthcare administration. Hospitals desperately need operations people and the pay’s solid.

Don’t let slow responses get to you. Hiring’s just weird right now.

You’re selling yourself short with just assistant PM roles. I did 6 years in the Navy, and corporate training/development was huge for me - companies love military leadership experience. HR generalist positions pay way better than your target too. Getting my PMP before I got out opened tons of doors I didn’t expect. Don’t sleep on banking and finance either - they want our discipline and process mindset. Plus the structured environment feels familiar, which made my transition way smoother.
