Are management consulting firms facing a growing reputation crisis with lasting impact?

I’ve been noticing something concerning about how people view management consulting these days. After switching careers from consulting to another field about two years back, I keep running into negative attitudes toward the industry.

Whenever I mention my consulting background, people seem skeptical. They assume I’m all about flashy presentations without substance. This wasn’t always the case, but now it feels like public opinion has really shifted against consultants.

The criticism isn’t brand new, but it seems to have spread beyond industry insiders. Regular people now view consulting jobs as either meaningless busywork or genuinely problematic. I’m curious if others have noticed this change too.

Is this reputation damage something temporary or a permanent shift? More importantly, what could this mean for the consulting business overall? Will companies start avoiding external consultants and handle projects internally instead? If consulting loses its appeal as a career choice, how will firms recruit top talent in the future?

Hey! Don’t stress about it. Every industry hits rough patches, but consulting still delivers real value to businesses. Just focus on showing your problem-solving skills and actual impact - that’s what matters in any career.

honestly think it’s partly deserved tho. worked with mckinsey types at my last company - they charged insane fees just to tell us what we already knew. plus all those opioid crisis scandals didn’t help their image. might not be permanent, but they need to prove actual value instead of just fancy powerpoints.
