I graduated with a Master of Management and Professional Accounting (MMPA) from University of Toronto. The program had MBA-style courses and was designed to help students get their CPA license. But since I finished school, I have only worked in banking, finance, and IT jobs. I never did any actual accounting work and I don’t have my CPA certification.
Now I’m wondering if this degree would be acceptable for getting a TN visa in the management consulting category. I might get a job offer for a management consultant role soon. Does anyone know if my educational background would meet the requirements? I’m a bit worried because my work experience has been more in finance and technology rather than traditional consulting.
Absolutely! Your MMPA from UofT works perfectly for the TN management consultant category. That finance and IT experience actually makes you more valuable - clients love consultants with diverse backgrounds!
I went through the same thing! Had my MBA but worked in tech before getting my TN as a management consultant. The border officer didn’t even look at my work history - they just care if your degree matches the category. Your MMPA works since it’s basically a business master’s. Make sure your offer letter has solid consulting language - that’s what helped me. Don’t worry about lacking traditional consulting experience. Tons of us jump into consulting from other fields.
lol everyone’s way too optimistic. Yeah, your MMPA technically qualifies but don’t get cocky - border officers can be real pricks when work experience doesn’t match your degree. I’ve seen people with “perfect” credentials get grilled for hours because their resume doesn’t scream “consultant.” Your banking/IT background might work against you if the officer thinks you’re gaming the system. Have a solid explanation ready for why you suddenly want consulting after years in finance/tech.
yeah, you should be good with ur MMPA! it’s a reputable degree and immigration just checks if you’ve got the right qualifications, not so much ur work history. ur finance/IT background is useful for consulting too. just get ur job desc. to reflect actual consulting tasks.
Your MMPA should qualify you for TN status as a management consultant. It’s a graduate business degree from an accredited Canadian university, which is what matters. Immigration officers don’t care if you’re a practicing accountant - they want to see that your degree shows relevant business knowledge for consulting work. They focus on whether your credentials match the professional category, not your work history. The real key is your job offer. It needs to clearly describe management consulting duties - not just generic business analysis or project management. Have your employer write the job description carefully, emphasizing strategic consulting, organizational improvement, and business advisory work to strengthen your application.
