I’m currently going through the interview process for several consulting firms and trying to figure out if this field offers good job security. I keep hearing mixed things about whether junior consultants get cut during tough economic times. Does anyone have insights into how stable entry-level positions are in this sector? I’m also curious about the overall health of the consulting market right now. Are companies still hiring at the same rate as before, or have things slowed down? Any advice from people already working in consulting would be really helpful as I’m trying to decide if this is the right career move for me.
I’ve been through several economic cycles in consulting, so here’s my take on stability. Junior folks usually get hit harder during downturns - firms keep their billable senior people when clients start cutting budgets. But it really depends on the firm and what kind of work they do. Big Four and top strategy firms have structured programs that offer some protection, while boutiques can swing wildly when the market shifts. Right now it’s a mixed bag - digital transformation and ESG work are still going strong, but traditional cost-cutting projects have leveled off. I’d look at firms with diverse services and solid client retention rather than just focusing on how many people they’re hiring right now. Strong junior consultants usually survive the rough patches better, and you’ll build analytical skills that transfer well to other industries if you need to jump ship.
Consulting’s hot right now! Companies are hunting for fresh talent, so your timing’s spot-on. They love new perspectives and that energy you bring.
the market’s def tighter than it was a few years back. we’ve slowed hiring and are more picky about candidates. but if u can land a decent place, the experience is worth its weight in gold - even if u dont stick around forever. just dont expect the crazy growth we saw from 2019-2021.
honestly things are pretty rough for newbies right now. my firm just laid off 30% of first-years but kept all the seniors. it’s brutal out there, but if you can stick it out for 2-3 years you’ll be set
lol “job security” in consulting? That’s a joke. The industry’s a revolving door - firms burn through junior people like they’re disposable. Yeah, they’re hiring, but they’ll dump you the second budgets get tight. Don’t buy the recruitment BS about “career development” - you’re expensive temp labor until you prove you’re worth keeping.
If you’re dead set on this, just know you’ll probably be job hunting again in 18 months. The exit opportunities are solid though, assuming you don’t burn out first.
