Got chewed out last week for missing a 3:15AM doc request that the MD ‘needed before Asia open’ (spoiler: he opened it at 10am). Heard vets use tactical delays/auto-responses. What’s the playbook here? How do you manage responsiveness without becoming the ‘bad at comms’ analyst?
step 1: set phone’s ‘do not disturb’ to auto-reply ‘in client mtg, will address ASAP’. step 2: actually sleep. step 3: if caught, claim you were ‘prepping the follow-up deck’. works 9/10 times – banks care more about output than when you’re conscious
i put ‘charging phone’ in another room after 1am… but then missed real emergency
maybe bad idea?
Knew a Citi VP who’d reply to late pings with ‘Looping in [juniors] for continuity’ – basically a bat-signal to associates. Got promoted while we burned. Moral? Always have a sacrificial underling’s contact ready.
