Turning summer internship momentum into real analyst-to-associate positioning—what actually worked?

I’m finishing up a summer internship at a top shop, and I’m at this weird inflection point. The feedback has been solid, I’ve got a couple of senior people who seem to like me, and I know there’s a potential for a full-time analyst role. But I’m hearing conflicting advice—some people say I should just do great work and let it speak for itself, others are pushing me to ‘stay connected’ and build on what I’ve started over the next 12-18 months.

Here’s what I’m trying to figure out: is there an actual playbook for converting a strong summer into a position where I’m genuinely set up for the analyst-to-associate pipeline, not just an analyst job? I’ve noticed the interns who got extended or who transitioned smoothly were doing something different. They weren’t just good at their work; they seemed to have a clearer sense of how to position themselves.

I’ve been talking to a few returning analysts and they mentioned things like ‘getting to know people beyond your immediate group,’ ‘understanding which partners are actually hiring associates next,’ and ‘finding ways to stay top-of-mind without being annoying.’ That sounds logical, but it also feels like there’s an actual sequence to it.

I want to be strategic without being cynical. I work hard, I like the work, and I genuinely respect the people here. But I also want to make sure I’m not leaving anything on the table. What’s the difference between an intern who gets a job and an intern who gets a job AND a clear runway toward making associate?
