Should I pursue an MBA at 28 without changing career direction? (Female, 6 years experience, Business Development Lead in Middle East, 680 GMAT)

Hey everyone! I need some advice about whether getting an MBA is the right move for me.

My situation:

  • 28 years old, female, working in Middle East
  • GMAT score: 680
  • 6 years of work experience
  • Currently: Business Development Lead at a growing e-commerce company (got promoted twice in the last year and a half)
  • Previously: worked at McKinsey Dubai office
  • Education: Finance degree from top university

What I’m thinking:
I don’t want to completely change my career path. I’m happy staying in the same region and industry. Not planning to go back to consulting long-term, but I might consider senior management roles at bigger companies later. Eventually I want to start my own business.

My current salary is already pretty good compared to what most MBA grads make in this area.

Why I’m still thinking about MBA:

  • Always wanted to do it
  • Think the MBA brand name would help me long-term
  • Want to meet other ambitious people and build connections
  • Would be nice to take a break and learn new things

My problem:
Most people get MBAs when they want big career changes. I’m not sure if my reasons are good enough to justify the cost and time away from work.

My boss thinks I don’t really need it but said they’d write me a recommendation if I decide to apply.

What do you think? Is it worth it?

Sounds like you’ve already decided and just want someone to tell you it’s a good idea. The “always wanted to do it” comment gives it away. You’re making good money and don’t need a career change, so you’re basically dropping $200k+ on networking and bragging rights. Nothing wrong with that, but let’s be honest about what this is - expensive personal development. Your boss’s lukewarm reaction should tell you something too.

Your reasons are solid! MBA programs aren’t just for career switchers - they’re great for future entrepreneurs who need stronger networks and business skills. At 28 with your background, you’re in a perfect spot. Go with your gut!
