Hey everyone,
I need to renew my TN status since it expires soon. My company wants to extend my contract for another 2 years but they don’t want to hire an immigration attorney this time. They said the application is basically the same as before just with updated dates and they added my 2 years of work experience with them to the support letter.
They gave me a new support letter and told me to go directly to the port of entry to apply. The pay stays the same and my job duties haven’t changed at all. I’m comfortable doing this myself since I know my position well.
The main thing I’m wondering about is my employment verification letters from previous consulting jobs. I have 4 letters from past employers that are dated from early 2023.
Do I need to contact those old employers to get fresh letters with current dates? Or can I submit the same verification letters from 2023 even though they’re almost 2 years old now?
I want to get this done quickly since my current employer has already started looking for replacements. Any advice would be great!
Your 2023 employment verification letters are still valid for your renewal. CBP officers use these to verify your management consultant experience - they’re not checking if you still work at those companies. Think of them like college transcripts - they don’t expire just because you graduated years ago. What really matters is making sure your current employer’s support letter is solid and detailed. Since your job duties and pay haven’t changed, this renewal should be pretty straightforward with what you already have.
those old letters should work fine. i used employment letters that were 18 months old for my renewal last year - the border officer barely glanced at them. as long as they clearly show your consulting experience, you’re good. i wouldn’t bother getting new ones unless cbp specifically asks for them.
You’re overthinking this. The dates on old employment letters don’t matter much - they just prove you had those jobs, not that you’re still there. I’ve seen people use 3+ year old letters without problems. CBP officers focus more on your current employer letter and whether your role actually qualifies for TN status. Don’t waste time chasing old bosses for updated paperwork.
