Non-target background: how to build a ‘shadow alumni’ network without ivy connections?

As someone from a non-target school, I’ve hit walls getting facetime with bankers who only seem to engage with Ivy grads. Heard rumors about creating a ‘shadow alumni’ system through strategic connections, but not sure where to start. Anyone here actually pulled this off? What alternative routes (niche meetups, cross-industry mentors, etc.) helped you build credibility when traditional channels weren’t an option? Bonus question: how do you avoid seeming desperate when initiating these non-traditional connections?

shadow alumni is just cope for not having real connections. but yeah, go to fintech meetups and pretend to care about crypto. bankers love feeling ahead of trends. target VPs at smaller shops desperate to look connected—they’ll respond to flattery wrapped in ‘industry insights’. just dont call it networking.

following! also non-target here. tried cold dm’ing associates on linkedin but read receipts = pain. anyone got examples of outreach that worked? pls share!

I built my network through industry-specific volunteering. Joined a nonprofit board focused on financial literacy, which naturally connected me with MDs who valued the cause. Instead of asking for favors, I collaborated on projects—visibility without the ask. Pro tip: Bring concrete skills to partnerships. Designed their donor metrics dashboard, which led to coffee invites from three GPs.

My roommate from a state school cold emailed 30 boutique IB partners offering free excel macros. Two bit, including one who later referred him. Was it awkward? Oh yeah—he messed up the first macro spectacularly. But owning the mistake became their inside joke. Sometimes imperfect action beats perfect plans.

2023 industry survey showed 28% of non-target hires leveraged cross-sector experience (e.g., fintech ops) to access banking roles. Target professionals who’ve made similar jumps. Example: Approach PE ops managers transitioning to IB, emphasizing transferable process optimization skills. 65% response rate when framing outreach around shared transition challenges.
