Managing job offers during interview process - advice needed

I’m a mid-level professional in investment banking who has been job hunting for about a year. Recently I’ve been going through interviews with several companies at the same time. Two firms made me offers, but there’s a third opportunity that really interests me because it seems like the best fit for my career goals.

The problem is that the third company is moving much slower with their process. When I told them about my other offers and asked if they could speed things up, the hiring manager basically said they won’t change their timeline. Since I really needed to secure employment, I had to accept one of the other positions.

Now I have another interview coming up with the company I actually want to work for. I’m pretty sure they’ll ask about the status of my other opportunities. I’m torn about how to handle this question. Part of me wants to be completely honest and tell them I accepted another offer but haven’t started yet and would prefer to work for them. But I’m worried this might hurt my chances.

What’s the best approach here? Should I be upfront about accepting the other position, or would that automatically eliminate me from consideration?

you’re gonna tell them you “haven’t started yet” like that helps? you accepted the other offer - that’s done. if company #3 actually wanted you, they would’ve moved faster when you mentioned the other offers. they didn’t. stop chasing them and take the job you have.

Just be straight with them. If they really want you, they’ll understand and might even speed things up. Companies know good candidates have options - it happens all the time. Worst case they say no, but at least you gave it a shot.

I’ve been there before. Being transparent beats trying to hide things every time.

Investment banking recruiting timelines are a mess - this happens all the time. About 65% of people keep interviewing after accepting offers, especially in competitive finance roles. Having a job actually gives you more leverage since it proves you’re marketable. When they ask about your status, just say: “I accepted a position to keep my career moving, but this role is still my top choice because it aligns better with my goals.” Most firms expect this and can move faster for candidates they want. The trick is looking like you’re making smart career moves, not desperately jumping around. Companies respect people who juggle multiple opportunities professionally - it shows the business sense they want in banking.
