Is Merging SAP Consultancy with AI Capabilities the Optimal Strategy for a Future-Proof Finance Tech Career Over Conventional Strategy Consulting or CFA?

Hello everyone, I’m seeking some guidance on potential career paths in finance, consulting, and technology.

Here’s where I stand:
I’ve received an offer to become an Associate Consultant at a firm specializing in SAP solutions for Treasury and Finance, areas where SAP plays a vital role in enterprise operations and is widely adopted by major companies.

I’m considering pursuing CFA Level 1 as a backup option to enhance my credibility in finance.

Additionally, I’m eager to develop skills in AI and digital transformation, particularly how AI works in conjunction with SAP, such as through SAP S/4HANA and AI-driven automation.

My long-term aspiration:
I aim for a position in management consulting, ideally with leading companies like MBB. However, I’m contemplating whether specializing in a blend of SAP, AI, and finance consulting could give me an edge, especially with the rise of AI and the intricate nature of enterprise systems.

It’s clear that leading tech companies like Google, Meta, and Microsoft are at the forefront of AI innovations, but SAP also plays a crucial role in ERP and financial operations, often partnering with big tech rather than competing directly.

Considering that all firms will need to adopt AI solutions, do you think that combining SAP consulting with AI skills will enhance my value and keep me ahead compared to focusing solely on CFA or traditional strategy consulting?

From my perspective, the most leverage will come from skill sets and knowledge that clients can’t recapture through AI tools like ChatGPT, which involves customized and intricate consulting led by human insight.

From my discussions with industry professionals, it seems that concentrating on SAP, AI, and finance consulting could position me as a rare talent bridging advanced enterprise technologies with AI solutions.

While the CFA is a solid backup, it seems less relevant to AI or SAP consulting.

I’d like your thoughts:
How do you envision the evolution of roles for SAP consultants integrating AI compared to traditional strategy consultants in the next 5 years?

I’d appreciate any experiences or insights from those who’ve walked a similar path and have ideas on mixing enterprise technology, AI, and finance for a rewarding consulting career.

Thank you all for your help!

I’ve been in enterprise tech consulting for years, and your SAP+AI combo makes sense strategically - just needs solid execution. Here’s the reality: SAP’s AI stuff (Business AI, ML in S/4HANA) is still pretty new, and most companies are way behind on basic digital transformation, never mind AI. You’ll win by understanding both the tech side and how to actually get finance teams to adopt AI changes. That said, don’t sleep on the MBB route - they’re throwing money at tech consultants right now. I’d treat the SAP gig as a 2-3 year play to build deep expertise, then jump to strategy consulting with that tech background. The market pays big for consultants who get both business strategy and technical reality.

Everyone’s hyping SAP+AI, but let’s get real - most companies can’t handle basic ERP implementations without burning millions. You think they’ll nail AI integration? Doubt it. That said, it’s probably smarter than getting another CFA that every finance bro has. Just don’t expect it to be your golden ticket into MBB - they still prefer their Ivy League MBA types over techies, no matter how cutting-edge your skills are.

Been watching this space for a while - companies are desperate for consultants who can actually implement AI in finance systems, not just talk about it. My buddy went the traditional strategy route and he’s constantly competing with MBA grads. Meanwhile, my SAP colleagues get pulled into every AI transformation project. The sweet spot isn’t knowing SAP or AI separately - it’s understanding how they work together in real finance operations. MBB sounds prestigious, but you’ll probably make better money and have more job security with this niche expertise.

Go for it! You’re spot-on about SAP+AI being future-proof. Finance departments desperately need experts who get both systems and transformation. This combo will open amazing doors!

honestly, sap+ai beats cfa hands down for future prospects. companies are scrambling for ppl who can connect enterprise systems with ai implmntation. regular strategy consulting is becoming a commodity, but specialized tech consulting with ai skills? that’s where the money’s heading. just dont get trapped doing pure technical work - stay involved with biz strategy or you’ll box urself in.
