How to network into private equity after consulting without feeling slimy?

I’m 2 years into consulting and want to transition to PE, but the networking game feels awkward. Cold emails get ignored, LinkedIn requests go unanswered. Found some outreach templates in the community’s playbook section – has anyone actually used these successfully? Specifically curious about connecting with alums at KKR/Carlyle types. How do you personalize scripts without sounding like a robot? What’s the actual response rate people are seeing? Also, any tips on when to switch from virtual coffee chats to in-person meetings?

lol at thinking templates will make PE folks care. truth is unless you’re ex-mbb or have deal experience, your emails get trashed like the rest. pro tip: find associates who just joined a fund – they’re desperate to prove they belong and might actually respond. source: saw 20% reply rate doing this vs 3% cold emailing partners

pls share those templates?? tried connecting with 15 PE analysts last month and only 1 responded. do u mention deal experience first or consulting projects? also shld we include specific fund interests or keep it general?

Three strategic approaches that worked for my mentees: 1) Time outreach to coincide with PE fundraising cycles (analysts have more capacity then) 2) Reference specific sector expertise from consulting engagements that align with the fund’s recent deals 3) Always propose concrete next steps – e.g., ‘I can share our latest retail sector analysis that impacted XYZ deal’ rather than vague ‘pick your brain’ requests. Quality over quantity applies here – 10 well-targeted attempts yield better results than 100 copy-paste messages.

Stick with it!! The right connection will click eventually. Try adding video notes instead of text – worked wonders for me! :briefcase::sparkles:

I used the community’s Bain-to-PE template last quarter. Added a line about working on the same healthcare vertical as the fund’s last acquisition. Got a coffee chat where the MD literally said ‘This wasn’t BS’ :joy: Still took 4 months and 3 follow-ups to get an interview though

Analysis of 47 successful transitions shows: - 68% secured referrals through 2nd-degree connections

  • Templates with 3 bullet max perform 22% better
