FAANG promotion committees: what milestones really matter for senior PMs?

I’ve hit all the ‘official’ senior PM criteria at my company – shipped multiple features, led cross-functional teams, etc. But my promo package just got deferred again. For those who’ve navigated FAANG promotions: what unwritten factors actually move the needle? Is it stakeholder endorsements, visibility projects, or something I’m missing entirely?

spoiler: it’s who you golf with. but seriously? promo docs are fiction. real game is getting VPs to casually namedrop you in exec forums. protip: volunteer for the terrible company-wide initiatives no one wants. that’s where visibility happens.

wait senior PMs need promos?? i thought it was automatic :0 our sr pm just talks in meetings lots

The hidden curriculum: 1) At least 2 VP-level champions outside your direct chain 2) A visible cost-saving or revenue attribution story (even if inflated) 3) Mentoring junior PMs in a trackable way. Bonus: Controversial take – declining a feature request from a powerful stakeholder to protect team focus builds more credibility than constant yes-ing.

Meta 2023 internal data showed 78% of promoted L6 PMs had either a) owned a >$5M revenue initiative or b) resolved a chronic inter-team dependency. The key isn’t quantity of launches, but clear narrative of scaled impact. Recommend aligning 2/3 of your bullet points to board-level metrics.
