Does your bank actually have an unwritten associate readiness checklist, or is everyone just making it up?

I keep asking around, and I keep getting the sense that there’s some invisible standard for ‘associate readiness’ that everyone at my firm somehow knows except for actual analysts. Like, senior people talk about analysts being ‘ready for the next level’ but when I try to dig into what that actually means, the answers get vague. One person says it’s about ‘deal maturity.’ Another says it’s about ‘client management.’ A third says it’s ‘judgment.’ But nobody can articulate what specifically you’re doing differently as an associate that requires a different kind of readiness. It’s making me paranoid that there’s some checklist I’m supposed to be tracking against and I’m just… not tracking it. Or maybe there’s no checklist and everyone’s just riffing on vibes? I’m trying to figure out whether I should be asking my MD directly ‘what does associate readiness mean to you specifically?’ or whether that question would just make me look weird. Has anyone actually gotten a straight answer on what readiness looks like, or is this something your bank just never explains?

trust ur paranoia—there IS an unwritten checklist, it’s just different for every md. associate readiness to ur boss might mean ‘can run ur own deals with minimal supervision.’ to another md it might mean ‘can manage analysts and junior associates.’ to a third it actually just means ‘we have headcount and u haven’t screwed up too badly.’ the trick is asking ur specific md what it means to them, not asking generally. ur md will respect the directness way more than u think. something like ‘i’m thinking abt my progression—what does readiness look like from ur perspective’ is smart and shows u care abt alignment.

I actually asked my MD this during a one-on-one and didn’t die or get weird looks. Turns out he’d been waiting for me to ask. He basically said readiness meant I could staff deals without constantly checking in on every decision. Then over the next six months he deliberately gave me more autonomy to prove I could handle it. The clarity from that one conversation actually made me way more focused on what mattered. Definitely ask instead of guessing.

Asking directly is genuinely a strength, not a weakness! It shows you’re serious about your career and committed to growth. Go have that conversation—your MD will probably respect it!
