Seeking assistance for TMT sector interviews
I have multiple upcoming interviews related to investment banking in the Technology, Media, and Telecommunications sector. I’m looking to prepare for the kinds of technical questions that could come up.
What are some frequently asked questions in TMT investment banking interviews? I’m specifically curious about:
- Valuation techniques relevant to the sector
- Important metrics for tech firms
- Current market trends that may be relevant
- Questions regarding deal structuring in media and telecom
Any guidance from those who have experienced similar interviews would be greatly appreciated. I want to ensure I address all key areas and don’t overlook anything essential.
Thank you in advance for any tips or sample questions you might provide!
Most TMT interviews cover the same ground. You’ll get hit with enterprise vs equity value questions for SaaS companies, subscriber churn rates, and DCF modeling scenarios. They always ask about spectrum auctions for telecom deals - even though it’s not that relevant anymore. And expect to justify Netflix’s crazy valuation. Just throw around some “content moats” buzzwords and you’re good. Most interviewers are just going through the motions anyway.
TMT interviews are brutal! I did this last year and got blindsided by how deep they go on business models. You’ll definitely need to walk through DCFs for SaaS vs traditional software - the revenue recognition stuff is night and day. They’ll hammer you on EBITDA adjustments too, especially stock comp for tech companies. One guy made me explain why P/E ratios are garbage for high-growth tech and grilled me on EV/Revenue multiples. Also, know the recent mega-deals cold - they’ll ask about deal rationale and how everything got financed. Good luck!
In addition to the standard valuation techniques, expect to engage with behavioral questions regarding challenges in the TMT sector. Common inquiries include how digital transformation is impactfully disrupting traditional media companies and understanding the nuances that make SaaS valuation distinct from older software models. Regulatory topics are frequent, particularly around telecom spectrum auctions and merger regulations in media. Prepare for scenario-based questions, such as structuring a media deal in a declining cable market or the implications of telecom investments in 5G. Familiarize yourself with recent TMT deal multiples and be ready to analyze successful or unsuccessful transactions. Furthermore, practice articulating complex tech concepts clearly to accommodate various stakeholders.
