Struggling to get any responses from my cold LinkedIn outreach for MBB referrals. I’ve tried personalizing with company research and project mentions, but still radio silence. Has anyone here successfully gotten a warm intro through cold messaging? What specific phrasing or approach made consultants actually respond? Bonus points for concrete examples of messages that worked!
lol @ cold outreach. 80% of these messages are terrible. Pro tip: don’t open with ‘I’m passionate about consulting’ - they get 50 of those daily. Mention a SPECIFIC case they worked on from firm website, ask ONE sharp question. No one owes you a referral, show you’ve done homework.
i had some luck by msg alumni from my school! just wrote smth like ‘hi saw u did [project] - im exploring similar work. would love 15min to hear ur journey’ got 2 calls this way but no referral yet… progress i guess?
Key elements I’ve seen work: 1) Reference a non-generic aspect of their work (find through podcasts/press releases vs website) 2) Propose specific times to talk 3) End with ‘Completely understand if you’re unable to connect me further’ to reduce pressure. Example subject line: ‘Question about your [industry] case experience’ works better than mentioning referrals outright.
Don’t give up! One thoughtful message can change everything
Try adding emoji in subject line to stand out!
FWIW I got my Bain referral through cold email! I found a consultant who went to my tiny college, mentioned a class we both took in the subject line, and asked about how she transitioned from engineering to consulting. She forwarded my resume before we even hopped on a call. Sometimes common ground > fancy templates!
2023 industry data shows 6.2% response rate to cold outreach in consulting vs 22% for warm connections. For messages over 200 characters, response drops 38%. Optimal structure: 1) Shared connection/background 2) Specific compliment 3) Clear ask <25 words. Include calendar link - increases meetings booked by 3.1x.
