Breaking into PE from consulting: is cold outreach or alumni networks more effective?

Trying to pivot to private equity after 3 years in consulting. Heard mixed advice about using alumni directories vs cold LinkedIn outreach. For those who successfully transitioned, what outreach strategy gave you the most traction? How critical are case interview workshops specifically tailored for PE interviews compared to standard consulting prep?

alumni networks are just ego clubs for people who made it. cold outreach works if you’ve got deal experience – otherwise you’re spam. PE cases? total meme – they just want to see if you can BS about EBITDA multiples while sleep-deprived

Also trying 2 network in PE! Did u try virtual coffee chats? How many contacts needed 2 get first interview?? #privateequity

Strategic combination works best: 1) Use alumni networks for warm introductions 2) Prepare 3 customized LBO models 3) Focus on funds aligned with your consulting vertical. Tailored case prep crucial – PE interviews demand deeper financial modeling than consulting cases. All my successful mentees did at least 20 practice cases.

Both approaches have merit! Stay persistent – your deal experience will speak volumes :briefcase::sparkles:

2023 transition data shows: - 67% of successful PE hires used alumni networks as primary channel - Average 42 outreach attempts per offer - PE-specific prep increased offer rates by 38% vs general case practice. Key insight: Funds value operational improvement experience from consulting engagements.
