Big 4 Firm Employment Outside Traditional Audit Role

Hi everyone! I just graduated with a degree in Business Systems Analysis and I’m seeking advice on job prospects. I received two job offers from well-known accounting firms, but neither position is in their audit department.

One is for an IT audit position at Deloitte, while the other is a consulting role at SGV. I’m curious if these roles are still considered prestigious and if they offer the same career benefits as working in their main audit divisions.

Is it worth pursuing either of these opportunities, even though they aren’t in the primary audit practice? Do these other departments within Big 4 firms provide comparable career growth and professional development?

I would greatly appreciate insights from anyone who has experience in similar positions. Thank you for your thoughts!

Both are solid career moves at Big 4 firms, just different paths. The Deloitte IT audit role gets you deep into system controls and compliance - plus it typically pays 10-15% more than regular audit right off the bat. SGV’s consulting gig gives you way broader exposure across different industries and business functions. You’ll get the Big 4 name and networking either way. Think about where you want to end up: IT audit sets you up for cybersecurity, risk management, or tech consulting down the road. General consulting keeps more doors open - strategy, operations, all kinds of business roles. Both give you great exit ops to industry or other firms.

lol “prestige” - sounds like you’re still thinking about brand names from college. Both roles pay well and get you that Big 4 stamp, but let’s be honest. IT audit is box-checking and compliance work - not thrilling. Consulting sounds fancy but you’ll spend months making PowerPoint slides. The “same career benefits” thing doesn’t matter much since traditional audit’s getting automated anyway. Just pick whichever one you can stand longer without losing your mind.

I’ve worked across several Big 4 practice areas, and both options are solid career foundations with different perks. The Deloitte IT audit role puts you right at the sweet spot of tech and risk management - huge value as companies go digital everywhere. Your Business Systems Analysis background is perfect here since you’ll get both the technical side and business impact of what you’re auditing. SGV consulting gives you wider exposure to strategic business problems and client relationships. You’ll develop stronger presentation and stakeholder management skills that work across tons of industries. Both give you great networking and that Big 4 name recognition that opens doors later. Don’t get hung up on prestige comparisons. Think about what you actually want long-term: deep technical expertise in risk and controls, or broader business problem-solving? Either way, you’re looking at solid compensation growth and good exit opportunities to industry leadership roles.

Congrats on the two offers! Your Business Systems Analysis background sets you up perfectly for either one. Both are Big 4 roles with serious prestige that’ll open tons of doors. Go with whichever one gets you more excited - you really can’t lose either way!

You’re overthinking this! I’ve been doing IT audit at PwC for 3 years now and love it. The prestige? Still there - you’re Big 4, just a different flavor. IT audit exposes you to tons of systems and tech that traditional auditors never touch. Pay’s usually better too, plus you can easily jump into cybersecurity or risk consulting later. Don’t worry about the “main audit” thing - IT and consulting are where the real growth is anyway.
